Forgiving As God Forgives

What if God forgave you the same way you forgive others?

Would you feel forgiven? Would you be forgiven? Ponder this question for a minute.

Paul told the believers in Ephesus to “put off the old self” and “put on the new self” (Eph 4.22,24) and then gave them instructions on how to do it. One of the changes they needed to make was in their behaviour toward each other. In verse 32 Paul wrote, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.”

That little word, “as”, means, “in the same manner as.” So, we are to forgive others in the same way God forgave us.

What if God forgave you the same way you forgive others?

Which begs the question, “How does God forgive?”

If we need to forgive the same way, we’d better find out. Our next posts will explore some Old Testament texts that help us to understand God’s forgiveness so we can imitate it in our own relationships.
